Heritage Area Mini-Grant Program Accepting Applications for FY 2027
The Garrett County Department of Business Development encourages local nonprofits, municipalities, historical organizations, and community groups to apply for the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area's FY 2027 Mini-Grant Program.
Applications are being accepted now through August 31, 2026 at 4 PM, and, thanks to an increase in available funding, more heritage projects will be eligible for financial assistance this year. The Heritage Area has received an additional $10,000 in grant funding, increasing the total mini-grant program from $25,000 to $35,000.
The grants support projects that preserve, interpret, and promote Garrett County's rich historical, cultural, and natural resources while enhancing heritage tourism throughout the region.
"Heritage tourism is an important component of Garrett County's economy," said Kim Durst, Business Development Manager for Garrett County. "These grants provide valuable support for projects that preserve our community's unique character, strengthen local attractions, and create meaningful experiences for both residents and visitors. Investing in our heritage helps drive tourism, supports local businesses, and preserves the stories that make Garrett County a special place."
According to Heritage Area Director Amber Sanders, the program provides an opportunity to help preserve local history for future generations.
"I am pleased to once again be able to offer members of our community who have worked to preserve our history and leave a meaningful legacy for future generations an opportunity to preserve our history," Sanders said. "These grants help fund projects that preserve pieces of history that could potentially go forgotten."
Following the application deadline, the Heritage Area Grant Committee will review all submissions, with award notifications expected in mid-September.
Applications and program guidelines are available through the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area by emailing amber@garrettchamber.com or katie@garrettchamber.com, or by visiting the Garrett County Visitors Center, 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry. Applications may be submitted by mail or email and must be received by the August 31, 2026 at 4 PM deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
