Six performances scheduled for NIC theatre’s production of surreal comedy
Emma Inwood is about to travel into a world she never imagined.
The North Idaho College student from Hayden, as Alexandra Cafuffle, will play the youngest of three intrepid Victorian explorers in the witty, surreal comedy “On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning” presented by NIC’s Theatre Department at the Schuler Performing Arts Center on the Coeur d’Alene campus.
The performances, free and open to the public, are:
- Oct. 15-16, 7 p.m.;
- Oct. 17, 2 p.m.;
- Oct 22-23, 7 p.m.; and
- Oct. 24, 2 p.m.
The farther the explorers travel in the play, the less familiar the world becomes.
“The words are important in every production, but ‘On the Verge’ specifically hides so many layers in the word play that open up the inner worlds of each character,” Inwood said. “The charming characters and absurd situations they find themselves in are sure to entertain anyone.”
The connection between students, alumni and the local art community will be evident during the play by Eric Overmyer.
Production director Tracey Benson has a long history in local theatre and has taught at NIC, the University of Idaho, Gonzaga University and Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy. She serves arts programming chair of the Coeur d’Alene City Arts Commission.
“NIC Theatre functions as a bridge between current students, alumni and the larger Coeur d’Alene Theatre Community,” said NIC Assistant Professor Adam Kroeger. “This production gives our students the chance to step into a wonderfully strange world. ‘On the Verge’ invites you to laugh, wonder and see the world a little differently.”

From left, Hannah Howard, as Mary Baltimore, Emma Inwood as Alexandra Cafuffle, and Nova Peterson as Fanny Cranberry perform during a dress rehearsal of NIC’s production of “On the Verge or The Geography of Yearning” on Monday, Oct. 13.
