Maryland State Highway Administration(November 5, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning construction on a $2.9 million safety and resurfacing project to improve sections of US 301 (Robert S. Crain Highway), MD 5 (Mattawoman Beantown Road) and Mattawoman Drive in northern Charles County. To advance work on the project, crews will temporarily close a section of eastbound Mattawoman Drive starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, November 9. The State Highway Administration strongly encourages planning for additional travel time during construction.
Both lanes of eastbound Mattawoman Drive between northbound US 301 and the shopping center entrance near the bus stop will be closed for approximately five days. Crews will remove existing asphalt pavement and install a new concrete pad within the right travel lane. Once work is complete, the right lane on eastbound Mattawoman Drive will remain closed as the newly poured concrete cures before opening to traffic.
Drivers using northbound US 301 will be directed to turn right for southbound MD 5 (Mattawoman Beantown Road) to connect back to Mattawoman Drive. Westbound Mattawoman Drive will remain open, and commercial access will be maintained for area businesses. Work hours are subject to change. State Highway Administration will make every effort to complete this project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to residents, businesses and motorists.
The overall project is expected to be completed by spring 2027, weather permitting, and will be located at:
- US 301 between the Mattawoman Creek bridge (at the Prince George’s County line) and Substation Road;
- MD 5 between US 301 and Mattawoman Drive; and
- Mattawoman Drive between US 301 and MD 5.
Project improvements include resurfacing roadways within the project limits; installing new pavement markings; replacing damaged or deteriorated curbs; improving drainage; installing a new concrete pad along eastbound Mattawoman Drive; upgrading guardrails; upgrading curb ramps at designated driveway entrances and exits; and restoring landscaping in designated areas.
Contractor F.O. Day Company Inc. of Rockville will perform the work. Electronic message boards and barrels will safely guide motorists through the work zone. The US 301/MD 5 safety and resurfacing project may also use work zone automated speed enforcement to protect workers and the traveling public. Motorists should expect overnight and weekend lane closures, temporary traffic shifts and occasional detours as needed within the project limits. Customers may contact the District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or 800-331-5603 with any questions. Additional information about traffic changes and pedestrian impacts will be shared as construction progresses.
The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert and focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for assistance.
This project is consistent with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Serious About Safety initiative, a department-wide commitment to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives.
